PRESIDENT'S CORNER
With a little help from our friends
Dear Members,
Since my last Xpress column, our calendar of activities has been in full swing and I have enjoyed meeting with many of the volunteers and partners who help make FEI Canada the vibrant organization that it is.

Michael Conway, ICD President & CEO Bev Topping, |
Toronto Chapter recently joined forces with the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) to put on an excellent dinner event attended by over 175 people. Corporate Governance experts Claude Lamoureux and David Beatty (respectively the retiring CEO of Ontario Teachers Pension Plan & the Managing Director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance) put on an excellent presentation, as is obvious from the attached video.
This month I met with the Southwestern Ontario Chapter Board, led by its Chapter President Dawn Butler, and we had good discussions on FEI Canada's value proposition. A member event at the newly-renovated Spencer Conference Centre of the University of Western Ontario followed, where STS Capital Partners principals Rob Follows and John Ferguson made an intriguing presentation entitled "The Trillion-Dollar Challenge – Private Business Transition in Canada".

|
Shaker Rawan, Keith Davis, Carlos Ramirez and Daiva Blyskis |
Another interesting event this past month was the 2nd Annual "Best in Class" Invitational Business Case Competition amongst eight of Canada's top business schools. The Schulich School of Business placed first in the competition, with teams from Rotman School of Management and Haskayne School of Business placing second and third, respectively. This event and its closing dinner were excellently organized by a Toronto Chapter committee chaired by Judy Munro – thanks Judy!
FEI Canada hosted a reception to recognize our National Strategic Partners for their significant contribution to the organization. Our thanks go out to Brendan Moore, Ernst & Young, IBM, KPMG, Microsoft, National Bank, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Robert Half, SAP, Sun Life and TD Asset Management for their much appreciated support.

Michael Cangemi, Michael Conway, Alexis Dow, Robert Herz |
In New York this month, I benefited from the kind hospitality of Alexis Dow, Michael Cangemi and Grace Hinchman (FEI US's Chair, President & CEO and Senior VP respectively) when I attended their Hall of Fame awards and FEI's Current Financial Reporting Issues conference. Robert Pozen, Chair of the SEC's Advisory Committee on Improvements to Financial Reporting, addressed the conference on reducing financial reporting complexity, an issue FEI Canada will monitor as it awaits the Pozen Committee findings. I met with FASB Chair Robert Herz and IASC Vice-Chair Thomas Jones, and was pleased to note that both Bob and Tom had heard of FEI Canada's call for a "sane" adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and a one-year extension to the 2011 IFRS implementation date unless certain issues are resolved quickly. Finally, FEI members whose companies are inter-listed in the United States will be happy to hear of the SEC's landmark decision this month to accept IFRS financial statements without reconciliation to U.S. GAAP.
If you would like to either share or hone your technical abilities, FEI Canada is actively seeking members to participate on our Committee on Corporate Reporting (CCR) and on our Issues and Policy Advisory Committee (IPAC). We would like to hear from all interested members, but we have a particularly pressing need for participation from more members in private companies – see FEI Canada Technical Committees.
Finally, the month finished up with FEI Canada's Strategic Planning Retreat, attended by our National Board and Chapter Presidents from across the country. An excellent exchange of ideas concerning FEI Canada's future occurred, and I will include a summary of these strategic thoughts in next month's FEI Canada Xpress.
I enjoy receiving your feedback, so please continue to provide me with the benefit of your views at mconway@feicanada.org.

FEI Canada Technical Committees
FEI Canada is actively seeking members to participate on our technical committees. Joining one of FEI Canada's high profile committees has many advantages including the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to policy and standards setting in Canada. As a Committee member you will have access to experts and opinion leaders in your ever-evolving professional environment. Additionally, participation on the committees serves as professional development that can be used towards your accreditation.
Committee on Corporate Reporting (CCR)
The CCR focuses on issues relating to financial accounting, auditing and corporate reporting. It puts members on the inside track of the activities of the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) and the Emerging Issues Committee of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA). Through the CICA, the Committee also makes its views known to the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Senior CICA staff members frequently participate at CCR meetings. The CCR also maintains a close relationship with the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) on issues relating to corporate reporting. As with the CICA, senior OSC staff members frequently participate at CCR meetings. FEI Canada's CCR also keeps abreast of notices from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) that would affect Canadian inter-listed companies.
Issues and Policy Advisory Committee (IPAC)
The Issues and Policy Advisory Committee was established to provide guidance and expert opinion on emerging issues relevant to FEI Canada members, and act as advisors on issues of importance to industry groups, government, associations, and other constituents who will benefit from the impartial council of the Committee. The Committee has a broad agenda and has developed a number of Task Forces. These subcommittees include: corporate governance; the structure of capital markets; internal control certification; pensions; taxation; private company issues; and public sector accountability.
**Currently, FEI Canada is also seeking interested members to join our CCR and IPAC Joint subcommittee on Private Company Reporting. This is a terrific opportunity to get involved and contribute to both sides of the technical spectrum.
If you are interested in joining either of these committees, please contact:

UPCOMING EVENTS - FEI Canada
December National Breakfast Seminar Series
Sponsored by |
The New World of Treasury - Lessons from the Summer of 2007
REGISTER NOW for our next National Breakfast Seminar series, The New World of Treasury - Lessons from the Summer of 2007.
The summer of 2007 provided everything but downtime for investors amid capital market upheaval, a changing credit environment and volatility in the money and fixed income markets related to liquidity issues. Calls of a "global credit crisis" have given rise to significant concerns across the Canadian Commercial Paper market; in particular the management of treasury funds, some now indirectly linked to the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the U.S., and the ill-liquidity of Asset-Backed Commercial Paper.
Senior finance executives today need to be armed with the developing facts in order to cope with and consider adapting their current approach to this aspect of corporate asset management.
- The origins and evolution of the financial turmoil.
- Review the players and their roles.
- Discuss what's in store for the fixed income markets.
- Consider how the sector has changed.
- And looking ahead, examine what Financial Executives and corporate money managers should be considering for capital preservation and liquidity purposes.
